Let's go racing......

This cake was for my nephew's birthday yesterday.  He comes from a racing family and even races his own dragster at our local track.  I thought a drag strip cake would be perfect for him.  Granted I didn't get to make a light for the median, it still made the statement I was going for.  And it tasted delicious!  There was none left!! Success!

Hello Kitty Birthday

My niece wanted a Hello Kitty cake for her party.  This gave me a chance to make marshmallow fondant for the first time.  I used it to make HK and the words on the left.  You can't see from the picture but I also made a ladybug for the top cupcake.  On the cake I did a frozen buttercream transfer to make the ballerina.  I think it all turned out pretty good.  And everyone enjoyed it of course :)

Ombre in the oven....

I've been wanting to try an ombre rosette cake. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out on my first try. I misjudged the amount of icing for the lighter shade so I had to finish up the top with a twist. Not exactly what I wanted but I'm still happy with it!

Some days....

Sometimes things move way too fast. Like work. You get in a groove and before you know it you've gone from coasting on autopilot to motion overload.

Then you get home and run from one errand to another trying to get everyone squared away. When you can finally sit down and catch your breath, you realize exactly how fast time flies.

So I love when a perfect opportunity comes along that lets you stop to enjoy the moment you're in. Dancing with my youngest son in the kitchen to this song.

Watch "Darius Rucker - Wagon Wheel" on YouTube

It gives me the chance to make another memory with my kids. And for that split second, you remember them as they are, not growing before you're eyes too fast to grasp. In that moment, they're just who they are, your babies, reminding you what really matters in life.

Course 1 completed...

Here is my final cake from the end of course 1. We had the choice to decorate our cakes any way we liked, using techniques learned during the 4 week course. I have a thing for purple. Is it too much??

Window Shopping

Today I took a much needed mental pause :) On my travels I was able to do some window shopping. Although I find "window shopping" to be such a downer! because I'm not coming home with anything; and 2. I can find a million things I have to have! Look at what I found..... I couldn't pass up going in the Fossil store. I have a few Fossil watches that I absolutely love. They've held up to so many beatings over the years. They are made of such good quality and are beautiful pieces. I've gotten so many compliments on each piece I own. I adore them. But I can't help but feel like I need more!! Can you blame a girl? I mean look at this thing! This picture doesn't do it justice. And don't even get me start on the rose gold collection they have. Oh and the bracelets! Gorgeous! Until we meet again Fossil store...until we meet again!!

Finally...

I've always had a love for decorating cakes and cupcakes. I've made some pretty cute things over the years. They all turned out pretty good but I knew my skills still needed work. I've always wanted to take a cake decorating class and I finally had to opportunity to get into the first course at my local Michael's store.
Michael's offers the Wilton method decorating classes. There are 4 different courses that cover everything from the decorating basics to advanced gum paste flowers. Each course is made up of 4 2-hour sessions. Here is my 1st completed cake from Course 1. Not to shabby! I'm looking forward to Course 2. We'll be learning about cake design and will continue to make more flowers where Course 1 left off. I'm so glad I was finally able to start in the Wilton courses. I absolutely love it!! If you're interested in cake decorating and not sure where to start,  go to your local Michael's or JoAnn's for more information. You may even want to check with your favorite local bakery. Sometimes they'll offer decorating classes too. Happy decorating!!
